A student died after she decided to go for a swim following a night out in Brighton, an inquest heard. Horsham Coroner’s Court was told Betty Griffiths had been drinking in bars and a nightclub in the city with a friend. The 21-year-old walked into the sea after leaving a club on the promenade in the early hours of April 16.
An inquest heard the student from Lewes entered the water at around 3.30am. Coroner’s officer Ken Jewel said: “Betty had been out in Brighton with a friend.
“They had been to a nightclub and had been drinking. “Betty decided to go into the sea. “She entered the water around 3.

Following an extensive search by coastguard, Ms Griffiths was found at Black Rock on Brighton seafront.
Death was confirmed at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton at 9.28am. A postmortem examination gave Ms Griffith’s provisional cause of death as cardiac arrest and drowning.
Assistant coroner Joanne Andrews adjourned the inquest until July and asked for reports from police and medical service. “I will ask my coroner’s officers to obtain statement from the family on her background,” Ms Andrews said. A spokesman for the Coastguard said a search and rescue helicopter as well as Shoreham and Newhaven Coastguard teams and lifeboats from Shoreham and Brighton were involved in the search for Ms Griffiths.
