FAIRFIELD — Solano College Theatre will open the play, "No Exit," later on April 30. It's directed by SCC student Alex Camerino and produced by SCT Artistic Director Christine Mani. The one-act dark comedy features three new arrivals to Hell: Garcin, played by Ethan Hosking; Inez, played by Lucien Rush; and Estelle, played by Zakiya Ruff.
The three expect punishment in the way one might assume – knives, torches, et cetera – but instead discover that hell is, in fact, other people. This production features a set quite familiar to Bay Area locals – a BART train. “Instead of a run-down hotel, this production modernizes the original setting (rather like a dentist’s waiting room, per the script) into an infinite BART train zooming in and out of Hell,” Camerino said in a press release.
“I know I’ve been stuck on public transit a few too many times with people like the characters in the show. I wanted to highlight the absurdity of the human experience, and how we make light of the worst in people by boldly laughing.” Hosking, Rush and Ruff are all studying theater at Solano Community College.
Ruff plays a high-society woman who insists that there was a mistake, and she shouldn’t actually be in hell. “I auditioned for this show to get out of my comfort zone," she said in the press release. "I’m used to doing musicals, and this show allows me to get deep into the emotions of Estelle, and take it to the extreme.
People will see a whole other level to the actors.” Camerino is excited to bring this show to the Studio G black box theater at the Fairfield campus of Solano Community College. “This is my directorial debut, but I am no stranger to theater," he said in the press release.
"The theater community has supported me to grow into the person I am today – a stronger, braver, softer person than I was before. “This show is dedicated to the 15-year-old me who needed that love, as well as all the other kids like me who are still figuring out who they are, and who they want to be.” The all-student design team includes Ezra Ruggles (costume design), Luna Swarner (set design), William Schmidt (lighting design), Jordan Ledbetter (sound design), and Kaitlyn Fontana (properties design).
Performances are 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays and 2 p.
m. Saturdays and Sundays. It runs through May 4.
The May 3 matinee will feature understudy performers. Tickets are $5. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to www.
