Health Sciences North in Sudbury announced its five-year plan Thursday, a strategy that it says includes five key goals. Those goals include providing quality, people-centered care; empowering human potential; advancing equity through social accountability; achieving health-care excellence through education and research; and, strengthening organizational sustainability. David McNeil, HSN’s president and CEO, said staff are focused on the expansion of the building and service.
“We know today that we have over 120 patients that are in what we call unconventional bed spaces,” McNeil said. “Our emergency department is overcrowded. We need to expand and ensure we’re meeting the needs of our children, mental health and addictions and the elderly population.
” The hospital also has to focus on advancing its role as an academic centre, he said, “so that we make sure that we have the health-care professionals for the next generation.” In a nod to the pressure that frontline staff face, McNeil said they also have to make “sure that we have a healthy workforce, recognizing that health care is a challenging work environment.” Cancer survivor The launch of the strategic plan also featured stories from patients like Clara Bossart-Pletzer, who was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in 2022.
She now serves as vice-chair for the patient and family advisory committee. “I really think of patient and family engagement as part of social accountability,” Bossart-Pletzer said. “So I’m really excited to see what that looks like over the five years because of the inclusion in the strategic plan, it means it’s a priority for the institution and the support will be there.
” HSN Foundation president Anthony Keating also reinforced the idea that donors make the plan possible. “In our last strategic plan, the Foundation played a role in advancing 15 of the 19 outcomes,” Keating said. “This plan is no different.
As we look to the future, the need for donor support will grow. So we’re going to be asking you more often and for more money. We’ve already raised close to $40 million toward our capital expansion, but we’ll need even more to ensure that HSN is the right size for our region.
” HSN currently serves nearly 600,000 people across 400,000 square kilometres and supports 23 partner hospitals. Officials said the ‘Together For You 2030’ plan charts a path to a healthier, more equitable and innovative future..
