Gilbert Kabamba of Dorchester came oh so close to becoming a back-to-back national boxing champion.But the Dorchester fighter was edged in a split decision during the final bout of the Golden Gloves of America Tournament of Champions on Saturday night in Tulsa, Okla.Last year Kabamba earned his title with a victory over Sardius Simmons of Flint, Mich.
Simmons, a left-handed boxer, got his revenge Saturday with a 3-2 victory in their 198+ pound fight.“He’s definitely disappointed,” New England Golden Gloves executive director Bob Russo said. “He had a real good tournament.
It was close. It was kind of a flip of the coin type thing.”It was a terrific showing for Team New England as the team finished fourth out of 30 franchises.
The team was put together following action this past winter at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium.“It was a pretty good finish,” Russo said. “We haven’t finished that highly in quite awhile.
”Kabamba was the only New England fighter to make the finals. Two others lost in the semifinals.Track3 Redmen champs: Tewksbury produced three individual champs at the Division 4 State Relay Meet in Pembroke.
Manny Mengata earned the boys discus title with a throw of 42.48 meters. On the girls side, Shea Macdonald was the high jump champion (4-10.
25) and Delaney Chretien won the pole vault (6-0).Tigers excel: The Tyngsboro boys and girls competed today at the 52nd Girls District E Division 2 Central Mass. Championship at Ayer-Shirley Regional High School.
The girls finished eighth overall, earning 41.5 points.Eighth-grader Savannah Jansson won the high jump (4-10), finished second in the long jump (16-7) and took second in the 400 hurdles (1:09.
56). Senior Addison Collins was third in the 100 hurdles (16.93), sixth in the high jump (4-8) and sixth in the triple jump (32-11.
5).The 4×800 team of Hannah Levesque, Isabella Duarte, Camryn Times and Morgan Manning was sixth in 11:18.04.
Eighth-grader Levesque finished first in the Middle School mile with a meet-record time of 5:36.05.The boys finished 11th, earning 27 points.
Junior Christian Riley won the long jump (21-9.5), fourth in the 110 hurdles (16.18) and fifth in the triple jump (40-4).
Junior Jake Haubner was fifth in the 800 (2:05.00) and senior Johnathan Mantzoufas was sixth in the 100 (11.86).
G-D teams soar: Groton-Dunstable competed at the Division 4 State Relay Meet in Pembroke.The sprint medley team took second in 3:39.32, setting a new school record and qualifying for nationals.
The team consists of Andrew Kosiba, Greyson Duane, Isaac Stallman and Tim Yafrate.For the girls, the javelin relay team finished fourth with a combined distance of 75.62 meters thanks to Danielle Imurang, Hannah Mandell and Jolie Becker.
Clarke wins: Dracut’s Zoe Clarke won the discus at the Division 4 State Relays Meet in Pembroke with a toss of 38-03.BaseballNorth Andover 3, Billerica 0: Billerica didn’t have much luck at the plate against North Andover’s Dylan Lawrence, who scattered five hits over his seven shutout innings. North Andover scored twice in the fifth and once in the seventh.
Waltham 2, Westford 1: The Ghosts were edged during a 10-inning Dual County League marathon.Kyle Janowicz and Tyler Eliasen limited Waltham to five hits and combined to strike out 10 batters. Offensively, JJ Funaro provided two hits and an RBI.
Evan Pasters, Ryan Snow, Nick Scarano and Aaron Hughes also had hits for WASoftballGLT 13, Shawsheen 1: Morgan Haskell collected the win on the mound for the Gryphons during the CAC clash.The Gryphons tallied 16 hits. Chelsey Quealy claimed four hits with a triple, double and two singles.
