Supervisors dive into shipbuilding idea at Collinsville

FAIRFIELD — A background report on the Collinsville Water Dependent Industrial area is scheduled to be presented to the Solano County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. The report, which will include a "brief history, allowable uses under the General Plan, and applicable policies and zoning, will be presented in an afternoon session that begins at 2 p.m.

Part of the discussion is also to "encourage the property owners/project proponents of the shipbuilding concept in the Collinsville area to directly engage with the county on details of the proposal and necessary steps to achieve General Plan compliance," the agenda states. The owners of the 1,400 acres in question is California Forever. The board's item follows a surge of support from a host of cities, including Fairfield, Suisun City and Rio Vista, the latter of which has sent a letter to California Forever about the possibility of annexing that property and other land into the city.



Vacaville is scheduled to take up the issue Tuesday night. Mayor John Carli has already endorsed the concept. He called it "one of the most significant opportunities we have here in Solano County," with the potential of an economic impact bigger than Travis Air Force Base.

"I truly believe this is our time to step forward," said Carli, noting Solano's tradition of supporting national defense needs, whether it be Travis Air Force Base or, in its day, Mare Island. "And I have a sense this is perfectly situated for our region." The board meets at 9 a.

m. in the first-floor chamber of the government building, 675 Texas St., in Fairfield.

The morning session is followed by a closed session during which the supervisors will be updated on labor negotiations, existing litigation and anticipated litigation. As part of the morning session, the board is scheduled to conduct a public hearing on the proposed user fees for fiscal year 2025-26, which begins on July 1. It involves project fees and general government fees.
