FAIRFIELD – A resolution adopted Tuesday by the Solano County supervisors spreads the responsibility for promoting mental health and wellness across society. "Each business, school, government agency, healthcare provider, organization and citizen shares in the responsibility to promote mental health wellness and support prevention efforts in the workplace and across the community," the resolution states. The resolution recognizes May as Mental Health Awareness Month in Solano County, and May 5-11 as Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week.
However, the board was told that the stigma attached to mental health issues "still lives in the community." The county sees 8,000 individuals annually. That number includes substance use issues.
According to a 2022 California Health Care Foundation report, one in seven individuals experience a mental health issue, and one in 26 has a severe mental illness that impairs their daily activities. At least one in 14 children has an emotional disturbance that limits functioning in family, school or community activities. Those numbers make mental health the most common health condition California faces.
"Solano County Behavioral Health values shared decision-making between consumers, family members, and providers when developing goals and recovery plans," the resolution states, adding, "care is provided in a culturally and linguistically responsive manner with sensitivity to and awareness of the person’s self-identified culture, race, ethnicity, language preference, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, religious and spiritual beliefs, and socio-economic status." In other action, the board: • Recognized Custody Sgt. Neil Wakabayashi upon his retirement from the Sheriff’s Office after more than 33 years with Solano County.
• Recognized William L. Crow, Child Support attorney, upon his retirement from the Department of Child Support Services after more than 24 years of service with Solano County. • Recognized May 6-12 as National Nurses Week in Solano County.
• Recognized April as Native Plant Month in Solano County, and honored the Willis Linn Jepson Chapter of the California Native Plant Society and the Solano Resource Conservation District for their contributions toward the protection of California’s native plants and habitat. • Recognized April 24, 2025 as Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. • Recognized April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day.
• Recognized May as Building Safety Month in Solano County..
