Supreme Court lawyer Anas Tanveer has formally petitioned Attorney General R. Venkatramani for consent to initiate contempt proceedings against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey. Tanveer alleges that Dubey’s recent public statements regarding the Supreme Court and Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna were “deeply derogatory and dangerously provocative.

” Dubey stirred controversy by questioning the judiciary’s role in legislative matters, implying that Parliament and state assemblies should be dissolved if courts were making laws. His remarks, which also criticised Chief Justice Khanna, have been widely condemned for undermining the authority of the Supreme Court. The BJP has since distanced itself from Dubey’s statements, with party president J.

P. Nadda clarifying that the comments reflected Dubey’s personal views rather than the party’s stance. Nadda reiterated the BJP’s respect for the judiciary as an essential pillar of democracy, emphasising that party leaders have been instructed not to make such remarks.

The controversy originated after the Supreme Court raised concerns about provisions in the Waqf (Amendment) Act, prompting assurances from the Centre that the provisions would not be implemented until further hearings. Legal experts suggest that if the Attorney General grants consent, Dubey may face contempt proceedings for allegedly undermining the dignity of the Supreme Court. The matter is expected to develop further in the coming days.
