One Surrey park has built an unusual attraction set to stretch its users, quite literally. Photos show that the new parkour course at Merstham Rec is nearly ready to go, complete with obstacles to run, jump and climb on. The park near Redhill is undergoing a huge revamp, complete with a new pavilion, play area and outdoor gym.
When opened, the area will be transformed with lots to do for children both big and small. The new parkour course is aimed at the over 12s and has been decorated in vibrant colours and is a first for the borough. Like the rest of the park it is scheduled to open soon, so adventurers don’t have long to wait.
In Parkour, individuals aim to be strong to be useful, and practice completing challenges in the world around them. The art on the course has been created by Uncle Stubble who is also behind the recently unveiled mural at the pavilion. The entire park is taking shape.
Already the play area and outdoor gym have been put in, and the refurbished tennis courts have also seen some attention. While the parkour course is aimed at older children, the new play area is designed to be inclusive and accessible meaning children at different stages of development can enjoy. It is full of climbing, sliding, swinging, balancing and creative spaces, as well as national elements and sensory opportunities.
Sports will remain important at Merstham Rec, with football being the main activity . Despite the revamp there are still several pitches of different sizes and the council will continue to encourage people to be active with an improved network of footpaths. Plans for the park were only finalised after a consultation with residents, local groups and sports clubs.
The refurbishment aims to encourage play for fun, access for all, access to nature and improved wellbeing. This focus on nature means that new fruit trees have been planted for a community orchard, with more trees put across the site. There is also a newly designed picnic area, as well as table tennis tables.
The main work was set to be completed in mid-March but Reigate and Banstead council warned that this could have been delayed by wet weather. In its latest updates the council suggested that the refurbishment is almost finished, and the park is planned to open soon..
