What a muddy mess! This was the swamp which residents on Bayswater Street in Bolton were facing on a daily basis in 1969 Bayswater Street, Bolton, 1969 (Picture: Newsquest) Eight new semi-detached properties had been built on one side of the street in the Morris Green area and buyers quickly found. But the dream homes became the centre of a major row as residents campaigned to get ‘gumboots gully’ sorted out. The problem was that the road was unadopted with the housebuilders claiming it was not their responsibility.
They said that Bolton Corporation had indicated they would put down a proper surface and formally ‘adopt’ the road but that this had not yet taken place. Until it happened residents like Mrs D Dugdale and her young son Andrew had to be helped to negotiate the mud and the puddles every time they left their home..
