1 2 3 Pune: The Wakad police recently registered a case against three individuals on the charge of duping at least 10 people of Rs 2.22 crore by offering them 8% monthly returns on investing in their firm. The victims, including a makeup artist from Palghar, were lured to invest between 2021 and 2024.

The suspects collected money from the investors and initially provided promised returns. They, however, later stopped repaying. A 42-year-old makeup artist pursued the fraudsters for over six months before approaching the police.

The police registered a case under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, along with the relevant sections of the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (In Financial Establishment) Act. An officer from the Wakad police said the complainant came into contact with the trio in 2021. They offered him good returns if he invested money into their investment company.

"The complainant and his two friends agreed to invest. The trio promised 8% returns to the complainant and his friends. They also made agreements with the complainant and his friends," the officer said.

He mentioned that the trio deposited the money into their private bank account in Navi Mumbai. "Initially, they used to pay interests to the complainant and others, but later stopped," he said. The officer added that when the complainant and others tried to retrieve their invested amounts, the trio refused to return their money.

"The trio duped at least 10 people with the same modus operandi. Our investigations were underway," the officer said..
