While a Tube station is often associated with London, it's not always the case that an area with a station falls within the city's boundaries. Some stations are miles away from the city centre, making them perfect for commuters seeking lower rent but still desiring easy access to the city. One such town is Chesham, located 40 miles from central London but connected via the Metropolitan line.
Despite being nestled in Buckinghamshire, Chesham's Metropolitan Line connection ensures easy accessibility from London. A journey from Chesham to Liverpool Street station involves 21 stops on the Metropolitan line and takes 75 minutes. However, the entire trip can be made using an Oyster card, making it more affordable than most mainline train journeys.
The town features a lengthy high street brimming with unique restaurants, cafes, and pubs. History enthusiasts can explore establishments dating back to the 17th Century and one of the 23 Grade II listed buildings. Despite its easy access to central London, Chesham retains all the charm of a small town.
It boasts the unique Chesham Moor Open Air Swimming pool, over 100 years old and spring-fed. Additionally, there's the local Lowndes Park and numerous walking trails in the surrounding areas, perfect for enjoying the stunning countryside. Chesham is beautifully situated amidst four dry valleys, with the rare chalk stream of the River Chess at its heart.
Once renowned for its watercress beds, the river provides an idyllic starting point for countryside walks, with numerous footpaths to explore. The town becomes a hotspot for London walkers over the weekends, who appreciate the easy commute. Chesham maintains its traditional market days on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with the fourth Saturday of each month dedicated to a Local Produce market.
Here, visitors and locals alike can indulge in a variety of food, drinks, plants, and crafts. Chesham has also been home to several notable personalities, including national treasure Stephen Fry. The town has gained recognition among TV enthusiasts due to its connection with Taskmaster, as host and creator Alex Horne resides here and has set many of the show's challenges within the town.
Adding a touch of Hollywood glamour, Chesham was chosen as a filming location for scenes in The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley.
