East Dulwich’s Eric’s bakery has become a hit with locals, with a team of “strong capable” women running the show.

Located on Upland Road, Eric’s first opened its doors just two years ago in 2023, but already it has reached new heights. The bakery was named in Good Food Guide’s Great Britain’s top 50 bakeries list for 2025, featuring the best of the UK’s bakeries, and was one of three south London bakeries to make this list. Helen explained: “My whole baking journey so far has inevitably been leading up to opening my own space. But I didn't properly envisage that until I saw this space exactly and then it all materialised in my head.

” Helen told the News Shopper that East Dulwich was an area she had a particular fondness for due to its “strong community” and its equally strong independent businesses scene. "I think that's what makes East Dulwich special, I really get a sense of community around here, there's a real community feel. “People have really come to rely on us for their daily bread, which is very heartwarming. “We see the same faces every single week, so we've learnt customers' names.

One of the bakery's regular customers, Simon, told the News Shopper: “I’ve been coming here since they make the best rye loaf I've ever eaten and amazing tarts and lots of surprising things.

“They just do wonderful food and it's a very nice atmosphere in the queue, of local people.” The business is small and operates a kitchen-to-counter service, where customers can see the team of bakers as they work. The bakery opens on Thursdays to Saturdays from 8am, which normally attracts long queues, leading to bakes becoming sold out quite quickly. Helen said: “We're all women, and a couple of the girls in there, they've had very little baking experience, but they apply themselves, they're passionate about what they do, about bringing really tasty seasonal pastries to the locals. "I owe a lot to having such a strong team of women behind me as well, I couldn't have done it without them.”.
