It was a rare occasion where my son and I had the day to ourselves so we went to the cinema to watch the Minecraft movie at the Vue in Bristol before we headed off to Yate shopping centre. It was a lovely sunny day when we drove past The Fox pub and restaurant and my son asked if we could go there after shopping as he would like to try somewhere new. I was not up for cooking when we got home so we headed to The Fox around 3pm, and both of us were ready for some grub.
There is plenty of parking at The Fox, and it was quieter I think because of the time of day we went and the lull between lunch and dinner service. On arrival you wait at the door for someone to come and seat you and you are asked if anyone has any food allergies. My son has learning disabilities, autism and he's generally a lot younger in his ways for a 20-year-old lad - he can struggle with loud noises and shrieking and gets overwhelmed.
This has never stopped me taking him anywhere, however I have to manage things to stop him getting stressed often ask to be seated somewhere quieter when going out to eat. I mentioned quietly to the lady who greeted us, if we could please be sat somewhere which was not in the middle of the half a dozen tables, and the reason why. She said they get busy and it seemed to bother her I had asked in the first place.
My son was hungry and keen to sit down, and I thought she may be having a bad day as we do, and brushed it off. We were offered a booth which was actually away from the other tables of families, and could not wait to look at the menu. I went to the bar to order a pint of Pepsi and my son a lemonade and blackcurrant, although I thought £8 was a bit steep.
The barperson who served us was lovely, helpful and chatty and she made us feel at ease. My son opted for the 8oz aged rump steak which comes served with half a grilled tomato, button mushrooms, garden peas, beer-battered onion rings and chips, which costs £14.99.
I went for the jacket potato with tuna and cheese, served with a side salad of mixed leaves, slices of cucumber, tomato, red onion, red pepper, quinoa, kale, brown rice and soya beans, which costs £7.99. You are asked to place your order at the bar when you are ready so after I had previously changed my mind a fair few times about my choice, I went to order and pay.
Nipping back to my seat, my son and I decided to look over the dessert menu in hope we may be enough room for pudding. There were some great choices from a salted caramel cookie brownie to a chocolate fudge cake and equally a good coffee menu. When the food arrived, it was brought out by a very jolly waiter.
He asked if we needed any sauces or anything and I said about the salad looking pretty good and he said something along the lines of 'we don't do things by halves here', which made me laugh. Both meals looked good. The steak was cooked medium and delivered without a tomato as requested.
The jacket potato did look so good, however, as the cheese in the bottom of the dish was bordering on nuked, but it was lovely all the same. My son ate his dinner in record time I think, so no complaints there. He really enjoyed his food.
My dinner was lovely, too, not particularly adventurous I know, but a standard jacket potato with a really nice salad. Needless to say, after a pint of pop and a big dinner, neither of us could bring ourselves to order a dessert. We enjoyed our meal at The Fox.
It's a nice place to go and have some food, and I can appreciate why it would get busy. The food is reasonably priced, there is a nice outside area for children and bar staff and waiters are lovely. I am not sure though if I am going to take my lad back there again though.

The Fox pub: A nice place to eat but one thing left me disappointed

It's a family-friendly venue where the food is reasonably priced
