The sport of hockey was first played in 1875 and has Canadian roots but became popular in Wales. Here were are sharing some great nostalgia pictures of Welsh hockey enthusiasts in action - bruised shins and all! This first picture is of a very competitive match between Croesyceiliog Comprehensive and Brynhafron School in Barry. This great action shot shows the semi-final of the Wales Schools Under- 18 Hockey Championships in Pontypool back in 1994.

Look at the determination on their faces! In this next picture taken in 1994 is of Sarah Powell who went ‘flat out’ for her country. Sarah attempting to score against Argentinian goalkeeper, Laura Perrone dove on the ground at an international match in Cardiff. We did warn you there would be some bruised shins! What about the men’s international team? This one was back when Wales took on Pakistan in 1991.

Just look at their expressions! Cardiff certainly saw some shouting that day. This lovely shot was taken back in 91 as part of ‘The Newport Hockey festival.’ In a match between Newport and Shrewsbury where some competitive stick work happened.

Do you remember any of these daring matches?.
