WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 The Handmaid’s Tale got uncharacteristically romantic this week after Serena Joy (played by Yvonne Strahovski) was being courted by Commander Wharton (Josh Charles). The pair were dancing in the streets of New Bethlehem last week, and this week Commander Wharton presented Serena with a library. The gesture was supposed to show his willingness to be progressive and allow women to read, something forbidden in Gilead and previously resulted in Serena losing a finger for doing so.
Things took another turn as Commander Wharton then popped the question to Serena, who at first seemed uncertain about becoming a wife again. But she eventually submitted to the huge romantic gesture and believed she would finally get her happily ever after. Audience members were far more sceptical and took to social media to share their thoughts and theories about Serena’s fate.
One person posted on Reddit: “What a trap Serena is walking into. She laid out all her non-negotiables, yet she’s still so naive to the reality that once she’s married, she becomes property. “She’s had a taste of freedom, life outside the pressure of being a Gilead wife, and still, she chooses to walk right back into it.
“She was never going to be allowed to remain single for long, but watching her willingly step back into that world? Gag-worthy. Not surprising, though.” A second commented: “It’s on brand for her.
In heart of all hearts she is who she is. A religious zealot who still seems to believe in Gilead despite claiming that she’s changed.” While a third said: “The super cheap courting that Serena fell for is.

.very cringe. And I just love that for her.
” “Serena you are not a Disney princess don't do this,” warned another Redditor, noting the parallels to Beauty and the Beast. A fifth person said: “What do you mean? Disney princesses get given libraries all the time! Specifically in stories where they are also held hostage by abusive men. I think this time the story may unfold in reverse.
” Someone else wrote: “Oh, I think she’s gonna get exactly what she deserves from that man. He is not as innocent as he appears.” Another added: “Ah Serena, you never learn.
You never will. You are trapped once again by your own making.” Fans will have to wait and see how Serena and Commander Wharton’s wedding and indeed marriage unfolds.
A Gilead wedding was always on the cards from the season six trailer, now viewers will have to see if Commander Wharton really is what he seems or if he’s simply trying to win over Serena for his own ends. The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 airs on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ on Tuesdays in the USA.
