A former gasworks is set to become a landmark destination in Dundee with plans to transform the area. The new Eden Project is set to be a destination for green tourism - according to BBC , the project will cost £130 million. In June 2024, planning permission was granted for the new site, which aims to combine horticulture, exhibits, live music, art, food and retail spaces across three large and three smaller buildings.
The plans include a ‘Gathering Meadows’ for outdoor events holding up to 6,000 people and a water feature running across the site, reports Construction News . But the ideas don’t stop there, as there will also be a forest of new trees and an existing retaining wall will become ‘The Great Living Wall’. The charity, famous for its Cornwall site, is carrying out design work and fundraising for the project.
It does not have a construction or procurement timeline in place yet, a spokesperson told the publication. Other Eden Projects are also in either planning or development in Lancashire, Northern Ireland, Australia and China. In Cornwall, the Eden Project has become a hugely popular tourist attraction with many keen to visit the unique site.
A visitor wrote on Tripadvisor: “Our first visit to the Eden Project . We had visited the area in the early 1990s when the clay pit was still operational and to see the transformation from pit to Eden Project is amazing. “It's well thought out for visitors of all ages.
Refreshments are on the same price range as National Trust. The shop has some very tasteful souvenirs. Informative, educational and thought provoking.
“Although the tickets are expensive they are valid for 12 months so we visited a couple of times during our holiday.” Another penned: “A grandiose project , an extraordinary feat of contraction, a breathtaking result that gives you a life lesson in how to maintain and preserve our planet. To discover absolutely!”.
