WARNING: The following article contains spoilers from The Last of Us season 2, episode 2. The Last of Us viewers were devastated when they tuned into the second season of the HBO hit to find Joel Miller (played by Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) were at odds with one another. The duo's father-daughter relationship in the first series was a hit with fans but five years on, the pair no longer saw eye to eye.
But if fans were heartbroken after watching the season two premiere, they were inconsolable after watching the second episode. After celebrating New Year, the residents of Jackson Hole, Wyoming faced a storm as the 'infected' attack the town - and Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) and the Fireflies get caught up in the chaos. When Joel saves Abby from the 'infected' she takes the opportunity to enact revenge after he killed her father in the season one finale.
Abby shoots Joel in the leg before torturing him by beating him with a golf club before eventually killing him in front of Ellie. Unsurprisingly, viewers were left devastated by Joel's death and took to social media to share their heartbreak. One viewer posted: "I knew what was gone happen but it still sucks #TheLastOfUs.
" Another added: "I cannot believe they’re doing this so early into the season #TheLastofUs," while a third shared: " WTF??? Joel did not deserve that #TheLastOfUs." Someone else posted: "Ellie hugging joel's body just ruined my entire week, month, and year #TheLastOfUs, as another added: "So they REALLY KILLED JOEL?!?! #TheLastOfUs." But while viewers are devastated, executive producer Craig Mazin insisted it was always meant to be that way.
He told USA Today: "People are going to be upset. That's sometimes how good drama goes. "This was something that was always meant to happen.
So much of the first season was, in a weird way, leading to this moment. And it's upsetting." Craig added Pedro was also made aware of his death and how soon it would happen before signing up to the series: "When I talked to Pedro the first time, I said, 'This is how this will go.
' I wanted him to know that we're not going to do this for seven seasons with you in that spot. We're going to do a season, and if it goes well and there's a second season, this will happen." The Last of Us season 2 airs on HBO in the US and on Sky and Now TV in the UK.
