The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2 made a change from the game that means the Episode 3 trailer is even more heartbreaking.

The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2 was a heartbreaker, and the Episode 3 teaser suggests there are more tears to come. A major death occurred in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2 that fans of the game have been dreading. And we’re about to discuss that demise, so SPOILERS ahead.

The death of Joel at the hands of Abby was both upsetting and heartbreaking, but the events leading up to it were changed from the game , with different patrol groups affecting both the build-up and fallout from the tragedy. That’s set to have a knock-on effect in Episode 3, as new trailer footage suggests. Tommy’s tears of grief could also be guilt In the video game, Joel is on patrol with his brother Tommy, with the latter unconscious while his sibling is tortured and killed.

In the TV series, Tommy remains at the town in Jackson, while Joel patrols with Dina. That change was made to further explore the relationship between Joel and Dina. But it also fundamentally shifts Tommy’s role in the story, and also potentially changes what we are seeing in the trailer for Episode 3.

Midway through the footage, Tommy is sitting next to Joel’s body, with tears in his eyes. He’s crying from grief, of course. But thanks to this new turn of events, they could also be tears of guilt, with Tommy feeling bad that he wasn’t there to protect his brother.

So there could be an element of “survivor’s guilt” creeping into Tommy’s storyline as the series progresses, both for what has happened to his town, and over the death of his brother. Related Dina’s fate in The Last of Us games will surprise you Elsewhere the teaser focuses on Ellie, who is experiencing her own grief as she goes through Joel’s belongings, and holds his clothes close to he heart. In a box, she then finds a gun, which hints at what’s coming.

Dina tells Ellie, “I know their names, and I know where they’re from.” Over scenes of Ellie training for battle, she asks for the identity of “the girl with the braid,” who killed Joel. “Abby,” comes Dina’s response, and the trailer ends there, with Ellie and Abby on a collision course.
