WARNING: SPOILERS. The Last of Us has returned to our screens and has seen the brutal murder of one of the fan-favourite characters

The Last of Us has made a triumphant return to HBO and Sky, with the latest episode delivering a shocking blow by killing off a beloved character. Kaitlyn Dever, who portrays Abby in the post-apocalyptic drama, was responsible for the death of Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, leaving fans devastated. Despite many viewers being aware of Joel's impending demise from playing the video game, the heart-wrenching scene still took them by surprise.

The cast members also found the scene challenging, especially Kaitlyn, who filmed the crucial moment shortly after her mother's death. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the Apple Cider Vinegar star said: "It was just a massive scene emotionally, and with blocking, too. There were so many moving parts and so many things to navigate.

" She candidly admitted that the days leading up to the scene were incredibly difficult. Her mother Kathy had passed away from breast cancer just weeks before filming the scene. "My mom's funeral was three days before I did my first day.

So I was sort of in a fog. I was in a daze," she confessed. Showrunner Craig Mazin ensured she had all the time she needed to process her personal loss, even altering the shooting schedule to accommodate her.

"Because of my life circumstances, I wasn't actually able to do my normal routine as an actor, which was really interesting because I was kind of worried about it," she explained. In the gut-wrenching episode, Abby comes across a horde of infected hiding under dead bodies. She's rescued by Joel but swiftly recognises him, leading him into an ambush.

At a safe house, Abby and her group turn on Joel, with Abby revealing she is the daughter of the Firefly surgeon Joel killed at the end of the first season. She then proceeds to shoot Joel in the leg before savagely attacking him with a golf club, stabbing him in the neck as Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey) watches. Separately, Kaitlyn shared a heartrending tribute on Instagram after her mother lost a 14-year battle with metastatic breast cancer: "My mama.

My life. My everything. I don't even have the words.

"Nothing I'll ever say will amount to the gifts you have given me in my life, the boundless joy you brought, the deep, endless, unconditional love you gave me and our family. Your love was everywhere." The Last of Us continues on Sunday nights on HBO and Max, with UK fans able to watch on Sky and NOW every Monday.
