American public is disappointed, angry and fearful at the state of politics, CNN poll finds The American public is frustrated, disappointed and increasingly angry at the state of politics 100 days into Donald Trump’s second term in the White House, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS , with neither party positioned to change the mood. Approval ratings for Republican leaders in Congress are deeply underwater, with Democrats faring even worse as their rank-and-file turn increasingly negative about the party’s leaders. Nearly two-thirds of all Americans say things in the country are going badly today.
The poll also finds a rising tide of fear among Americans looking ahead to the rest of Trump’s second term, with many doubtful that the checks and balances built into the US government are doing enough to limit Trump’s actions in office. Here's a look at how Americans are feeling about Trump's economic policies A 59% majority of the public now says President Donald Trump’s policies have worsened economic conditions in the country, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS , up from 51% in March and on par with the worst numbers Joe Biden saw during his presidency.
Americans remain broadly unhappy with the nation’s economy, the survey finds, and there’s little enthusiasm for the White House’s sweeping new trade policies. Here’s what the poll found: • With the impact of new tariffs still largely to come, 6 in 10 already say that Trump’s policies have increased the cost of living in their community, with just 12% saying his agenda has helped to bring prices down. • Overall, 69% of the public considers an economic recession in the next year to be at least somewhat likely, including 32% who say that’s very likely.
• Just 34% of Americans call themselves enthusiastic or optimistic about the economy, with 29% saying they’re pessimistic and 37% that they’re afraid. Seven in 10 of those younger than age 45 express pessimism or fear, as do 76% of Americans of color. The widespread unhappiness with Trump’s economic stewardship marks a new chapter for a president who saw mostly positive ratings for his handling of the economy during his first term.
Trump, who pledged during the 2024 campaign to ” immediately bring prices down, starting on Day One,” won handily among voters last year who said they were primarily motivated by economic concerns, according to CNN’s exit poll “Everything I worked for all my life is rapidly [disappearing],” one Republican man surveyed, a 59-year-old from Georgia who worried about nearing retirement amid volatility in the stock market, wrote in response to the poll. “It will probably take years to recover what I have lost due to what’s going on.” Still, Republican views of economic conditions overall have risen over the past month, and most in the GOP say they expect the tariffs to have positive long-term effects on the nation’s economy.

CNN Poll: Trump’s approval is lowest for any newly elected president at 100 days in at least 7 decades Donald Trump won back the Oval Office and took charge of the government amid the strongest poll numbers of his political career, but as he marks the 100th day of his presidency, Americans’ views of what he’s done so far have turned deeply negative, a new CNN poll released over the weekend that was conducted by SSRS. Trump’s 41% approval rating is the lowest for any newly elected president at 100 days dating back at least to Dwight Eisenhower — including Trump’s own first term.
The poll also finds the president underwater and sinking across nearly all major issues he’s sought to address during his time in office. Economy: Trump’s approval ratings on economic issues have dropped notably since early March as the rollout of his tariff plan led to volatility in the stock market and worries about rising prices. On inflation, approval is down 9 points to 35%, and on tariffs themselves , it’s down 4 points to 35%.
His marks for handling the economy are down 5 points to a career low of 39%; he hit his previous low once in his first term and again this March). Only about half (52%) express confidence in his ability to deal with the economy, down 13 points compared with a December CNN poll. Managing government: Following his far-reaching efforts to reshape the federal government’s workforce , Trump has lost ground on approval ratings for managing the federal government (42% approve, down 6 points since March) and only 46% express confidence in him to appoint the best people to office, down 8 points since December.
Immigration: Even on immigration, an issue where Trump had outperformed his first-term high by 7 points earlier this year, the poll finds declining approval ratings and diminished confidence in Trump’s actions. Overall, 45% approve now, down 6 points from March, and 53% express confidence in his ability to deal with it, down from 60% in December. Read more about the poll and its findings here.
