Soham , in East Cambridgeshire , is believed to date back to the sixth century - and has some pretty spectacular sights. The town is well-known among locals for attractions such as South Angle Farm Park and its world famous Christmas house that's decorated with hundreds of LED lights.
However, there is one particular place that stands out amongst all of them. Netherhall Manor, ran by Historic Houses, is one of the oldest of its kind in the UK. Its magnificent manor house and rare plant garden have made it a hotspot among tourists in recent years.
The overall site consists of a walled garden around a recently restored manor house with a courtyard to the east. Along the perimeter wall grow many plants distributed by gardeners to their friends in the 1960s, before many Garden Societies were established. Several rarities have been nurtured by the owner for many years and have been saved from extinction.
The garden is open for tours on certain dates of the year (Image: Netherhall Manor) In spring, there are displays of crown imperials, daffodils, and old primroses. Later in May, there are old English tulips, which are the only ones on display in the UK and in August, the formal beds are planted with Victorian pelargoniums, dahlias and heliotropes. Netherhall Manor (Image: Netherhall Manor) If you visit the manor and garden, it is well worth exploring the rest of the town, which has a wonderful selection of cafes and pubs.
You can sit and enjoy a drink at The Fountain Inn, tuck in to some lunch at Aroma Cafe and Restaurant, or even take one of the nearby walking routes that loop around Wicken Fen Nature Reserve. Story Saved You can find this story in My Bookmarks. Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.
