The "stinkiest" areas in Brighton and Hove have been revealed. A Freedom of Information request to Brighton and Hove City Council disclosed the parts of the city with the most complaints about odours. Over the past five years, 346 odour complaints were made to the council.
Of these, 171 were about commercial odours, 92 were about residential odours and 73 were about fumes. The complaints were broken down by location, showing the wards and roads with the most grievances. The Regency ward topped the list with 45 complaints.
Central Hove and West Hill and North Laine were joint second, both with 42 complaints. Kemptown was close behind with 41. The full list of wards can be seen below.
Church Road, Hove, had the highest number of road-specific complaints with 22. Western Road followed with 21, while Sydney Street and St James's Street each had nine. Preston Street, with eight complaints, and Queens Road, with seven, also featured on the list.
The full list of roads can be seen below. Brighton and Hove City Council's website says: "We can investigate odour or smell as a nuisance from most sources. "We're often asked to investigate odours from kitchen exhaust/extraction systems serving restaurants and takeaways.
"In these cases, we can check that the extractor system and ducting are being maintained, serviced and cleaned properly. "There will always be odd incidents from commercial kitchen systems but they should not be excessive. "We are not able to deal with odours from domestic premises, such as cooking and cigarette smoke coming from within people’s homes.
"However, odour from accumulations within residential properties can be investigated." The council said there is little it can do about the odour from manure or slurry, following guidance from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs that this should be ploughed in within 72 hours of being spread. “As with any issues of this nature, we would always encourage residents to contact us so we can tackle problems where they arise.”.
