Nearly 40,000 people are on Universal Credit in Stoke-on-Trent - with one in four residents claiming the benefit in some neighbourhoods, latest data shows. The overall figure works out at 15 per cent of the city's population. Bentilee and Ubberley has the highest percentage (23 per cent) of claimants followed by Burslem Central (22.

Meir Park had the lowest rate in the city with just 3.5 per cent of people claiming. The latest figures, as of the end of October, come from the Department for Work and Pensions.

In total, 39,590 city residents are claiming Universal Credit out of a population of 259,965. Elsewhere in North Staffordshire, Knutton had the highest percentage of claimants in Newcastle-under-Lyme (18 per cent or one in six). Keele (1.

1 per cent) had the lowest rate in the borough. In Staffordshire Moorlands, Biddulph East had the highest percentage of claimants (13.9 per cent or one in seven), while Alton had the lowest rate with 2.
