Pune: The third wanted accused in the last year's Bopdev Ghat gang rape was arrested on Saturday evening from the old bus terminus at Akluj in Malshiras taluka in Solapur. Suraj alias Bapu Dashrath Gosavi (33), a casual worker and a resident of Bhavaninagar Sansar in Indapur, was about to board a bus when the Pune Rural police took him into custody. Assistant inspector Rajkumar Dunge of the Walchandnagar police said, "A murder suspect, Ashok Yadav, was in our custody.
We were travelling in a jeep for investigations when an informant tipped us about the arrival of Gosavi at the old bus terminus. We reached there in 40 minutes and took him into custody. We later transferred his custody to the crime branch of the Pune city police.

The Pune police filed chargesheet on December 2 last year against the arrested accused, Chandrakumar Raviprasad Kanaujia (20) and Shoaib alias Akhtar Babu Shaikh, within 60 days of the crime. Gosavi was named as a wanted accused in the chargesheet.
Additional commissioner of police (crime), Pune, Shailesh Balkwade, said, "We would seek Gosavi's custodial remand to collect further evidence and file a supplementary chargesheet against him. Multiple teams were working to trace him. Gosave's whereabouts were traced to Pune-Solapur border and T-junctions of Pune-Solapur and Ahliyanagar (formerly Ahmednagar), but in vain.
The rural police have done an excellent job in tracing him." Assistant police inspector Dunge said Gosavi was on the run since his involvement surfaced in the case. A team from the Pune police crime branch visited his residence in Bhavaninagar multiple times to trace him, but in vain.
His location could not be traced because he did not use a cellphone or social media. Gosavi deserted his wife, and did not visit his parents or contact his near and dear ones when he was on the run. "After Gosavi was taken into custody, he told us that he travelled to Solapur, Pandharpur and Kolhapur and did small-time jobs to earn his living.
He stayed in farm fields to evade arrest," Dunge said. The rape survivor from a city in Gujarat was pursuing studies in Pune. She and her friend, a chartered accountancy student from north Maharashtra, had gone to Bopdev Ghat on a night out around 11pm on October 3, 2024.
An hour later, the three men approached them near the "Table Point" on the ghat. The trio thrashed the young woman's friend and tied him with the belt of his trouser before taking turns to rape her. They also robbed her of a gold chain and rings.
Kanaujia, a labourer from Kadnagar in Undri, was first arrested in the case on October 11 last year. Shaikh, a ragpicker from Adarshnagar at Mantarwadi near Phursungi, was arrested from Prayagraj on October 14, 2024. Shaikh was identified as the ringleader of the group behind the heinous crime.
