“ This Is Spinal Tap ” is tapping into its cult fandom with a theatrical re-release for its 41st anniversary. The iconic mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap” will get a long-awaited sequel, titled “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,” September 12, with the original cast reprising their respective roles. To refresh before the sequel, why not venture back in time (and theaters) with the beloved first film ? Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer comprise the fictional band that director Rob Reiner captures as character documentarian Martin “Marty” DiBergi.
The concept for the film was co-created by all aforementioned stars; Reiner directs, with June Chadwick, Tony Hendra, and the late Bruno Kirby co-starring. Karen Murphy produces. “This Is Spinal Tap” famously chronicled “England’s loudest and most punctual band on their disaster-filled U.
S. tour.” That band, though, never existed.
The 1984 film is now remastered and remixed for the re-release. “The movie ‘Spinal Tap’ rocked my world,” Jack Black, whose own real band Tenacious D has been the center of a real documentary, said in a press statement. “It’s for rock what ‘The Sound of Music’ was for hills.
They really nailed how dumb rock can be.” “Spinal Tap II” will follow a reunion between the Spinal Tap members for one final concert after a 15-year hiatus. Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood will appear as themselves .
Paul Shaffer, David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, Derek Smalls, Fran Drescher, Don Lake, John Michael Higgins, Nina Conti, Griffin Matthews, Kerry Godliman, and Chris Addison will also star in the Bleecker Street film. “So happy to be working with the folks at Bleecker Street who are passionate about keeping Tap’s legacy alive and happy to give Marty DiBergi another shot at relevancy,” Reiner said in a press statement, while Bleecker Street president Kent Sanderson said it was a “ privilege ” to have the sequel at the studio.
Sanderson added that “This Is Spinal Tap” is a “cultural touchstone that pioneered the mockumentary genre.” “This Is Spinal Tap” heads back to theaters July from Bleecker Street and will screen through July 7 with Fathom Events. Check out the trailer below.
