INDIANA, USA — Watch out for showers, downpours, and some lightning on-and-off throughout your Friday around Indiana! You know how when you go to Florida, some hours are nice while others are filled with downpours? That will be Indiana today. We had a warm front come through last night bringing more humidity sparking scattered thunderstorms and downpours statewide today. Tap HERE to track the rain and lightning with our interactive radar.
Get ready for heavy rain at times throughout your Friday. If you start to see some sunshine today, it may help destabilize the atmosphere even more and eventually create more downpours and thunder later. There's a chance of rain at all times during the day, however, we think there will be higher concentration of showers and storms between 10 a.
m. and 7 a.m .
We are tracking some showers in the morning, but some of these are a bit lighter. By 10 a.m.
, we should start approaching 70 degrees which will help create heavier downpours and more lightning. It will not rain all day, but expect times of showers, times of downpours and times of lightning on-and-off through the daylight hours. Let's walk through your Friday.
Remember, the pictures are model simulations. The radar will not look exactly like this. Instead, notice trends, coverage and the intensity of the cells.
We have some isolated showers across Indiana, leftover from some downpours across the state. With leftover clouds lingering, it may be difficult to see the stretched out smiley face in the morning sky: crescent moon, Venus and Saturn. By the warmer afternoon hours, it will be open season for showers and storms across the state.
It won't rain all afternoon, but most Hoosiers should get a shower or two or three. The early evening will still have some downpours, but we are expecting the cold front to move in a little faster. Much of the rain and storms may start leaving by about 8-10 p.
m., especially if you live north or west of Indianapolis. Rain chances should quickly wrap up in the early night hours, then colder air will rush south.
Wind chills will drop to the 30s tonight across the state. We will drop into the 40s with very dry air by Saturday morning. The weekend will feel cooler, but some Hoosiers will love the 60s and sunshine.
While "severe" threats of tornadoes, hail, and high winds are very low, there may still be some gusty winds, localized flooding and lightning . However, most of the time it will just be some rain and occasional thunder. The bigger downpours will have the higher flooding and lightning threats.
While widespread high, damaging winds are not expected, there could still be some wind gusts at times with the bigger storms. This type of atmosphere can produce a microburst, which is a sudden drop of cold air from underneath a thunderstorm that creates high winds by the ground. These are usually too quick to issue a severe thunderstorm.
Flooding is an issue because of the lack of strong upper-level winds, the downdrafts and updrafts will collide and waterlog, reducing severe threats but increasing the flooding rain threats. Many Hoosiers may pick up a quarter or half inch of rain , but a few locations that get a long-lasting downpour could easily get over one inch of rain. Lightning will likely cause some delays at outdoor events, games and practices across parts of the state this afternoon and evening.
Make sure you pack a raincoat or umbrella in the car. If you are heading to a local high school baseball or softball game, girls tennis match, track meet, or boys golf, be ready to shelter in your car with some lightning chances. There will not rain all day and there may still be a few counties that dodge most of the rain showers.
