A Tk 13,525.57 crore project was approved today for the construction of the supporting marine infrastructure under the Chattogram port's Bay Terminal expansion. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) gave go-ahead to the "Bay Terminal Marine Infrastructure Development Project", said CPA Secretary Md Omar Faruk.
The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) will implement the project in between April 2025 and June 2031, he said. Of the total cost, Tk 4,192.57 crore will come from CPA's own funds, while the remaining Tk 9,333 crore is expected from foreign loans, according to project documents.
The World Bank has already approved $650 million for the construction of a wave-preventing breakwater and dredging of the access channel, two major components of the project. The CPA is also expecting another $200 million from the global lender. An agreement for the $650 million loan is expected to be signed between the Economic Relations Division (ERD) and the World Bank on April 23, said CPA Member (Engineering) Commodore Kausar Rashid, also the project director.
The proposed Bay Terminal will include two container terminals and a multipurpose terminal spanning around 4 kilometres along the Anandabazar-Halishahar coastline of the Bay of Bengal. A total of 13 jetties will be constructed, and to protect the terminal from rough sea conditions, a 6.217-kilometre breakwater will be built.
The CPA secretary added that the authority will soon float international tenders to engage contractors for the marine infrastructure development.
