The Town of Mount Pleasant announced on April 29 the creation of the Scanlonville Praise House Parklet, a new public space on Mathis Ferry Road that celebrates cultural preservation and community pride. This initiative, a collaborative effort between the Town and the East Cooper Civic Club (ECCC), honors the rich legacy of the historic Scanlonville Settlement Community. Once complete, the parklet will serve as both a destination and a cultural anchor for residents and visitors alike, reinforcing the Town’s commitment to preserving its history while fostering meaningful community spaces.
Located along the future Mount Pleasant Way multi-use path, the parklet will combine reflective design, interpretive signage, and native landscaping to share the Scanlonville community’s powerful story for generations to come. Project Highlights: • Collaborative Design: Developed with the guidance of students and faculty from North Carolina A&T State University and Clemson University. • Strategic Funding: Supported in part by a $150,000 grant from the National Heritage Corridor.
• Cultural Storytelling: Integrates native landscaping and historical interpretation to honor Scanlonville’s enduring spirit. Mayor Will Haynie emphasized the broader significance of the project, stating, "The Scanlonville Praise House Parklet is a perfect example of how Mount Pleasant’s values come to life. We believe in preserving our past while creating spaces that connect and uplift our community.
This project honors the enduring legacy of Scanlonville and demonstrates our commitment to thoughtful, meaningful progress. We are deeply grateful to the East Cooper Civic Club, the National Heritage Corridor, North Carolina A&T, and the many community leaders whose partnership and passion made this possible." The Town of Mount Pleasant extends sincere thanks to its partners, including the East Cooper Civic Club, the National Heritage Corridor, North Carolina A&T State University, and dedicated community leaders, whose collaboration and vision helped bring this important project to fruition.
