The Bradford Playhouse is adding step-free access as part of an accessibility transformation. Work was set to begin in early April, following months of preparation. The new upgrades will include the installation of a lift for wheelchair and ambulatory patrons, providing easy access from street level to the bar, box office, and accessible seating in the auditorium.
The historic venue will also be receiving new front-of-house toilets and exterior improvements. The project is being supported by the Bradford 2025 initiative, which has pledged "a generous amount" towards the project. The Playhouse team has been busy clearing out storage areas, the bar, and the tech box to make space for the construction work.
Despite the ongoing upgrades, performances in the studio will continue as scheduled. The unique layout of the Bradford Playhouse means that the work being carried out on the main building will not affect any of the performances in the studio. However, a temporary entrance via Number 4 Chapel Street will be used during the works, and a temporary bar will be set up in the sewing room upstairs.
The Playhouse team has asked for patience and understanding during this period, reassuring audiences that the changes will be "well worth the wait." The ongoing project still requires additional support to be completed to the highest standard. A crowdfunding campaign for the project is still accepting contributions.
The Playhouse has also called for volunteers to help with various tasks once the major construction works are completed, from cleaning and painting to organising storage. "Their support has been invaluable, and the Playhouse is proud to work alongside this incredible initiative as part of the City of Culture legacy. "The transformation of Bradford Playhouse will have a lasting impact on the venue’s ability to serve the Bradford community, now and into the future. "With these accessibility improvements, the Playhouse will continue to offer a wide range of performances and events for everyone, ensuring it remains a vibrant, inclusive cultural hub for generations to come.
