PUTRAJAYA: Police have arrested three men for allegedly obstructing a Road Transport Department (RTD) officer from carrying out his duties after two sand lorries were caught carrying excess loads.Putrajaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Aidi Sham Mohamed said a police report was lodged on April 9 by the officer involved in the incident. He said the RTD officer had instructed two lorry drivers to bring their vehicles to the Semenyih weighing station after issuing them a notice for overloading offence.
However, both drivers allegedly refused to comply."The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code," he said in a statement.Following the report, police arrested three suspects aged between 30 and 40 to assist in the investigation.
The arrests were made on April 15 and 17 within the Putrajaya police headquarters compound."All three suspects have been released on police bail," Aidi said, adding that the investigation papers have been referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor's Office in Kuala Lumpur and that further instructions are awaited.Yesterday, RTD Enforcement Division senior director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said the incident, which occurred on April 12, involved lorry drivers who allegedly tampered with two severely overloaded tipper trucks, including deflating their tyres, in an attempt to prevent them from being seized by the RTD in Putrajaya earlier this month.
The tampering was allegedly done to prevent RTD personnel from seizing the vehicles and towing them to an enforcement station.Overloaded lorries have been reported as a main cause of road damage and a source of safety concerns among road users.© New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd.
