The online store of US president Donald Trump is selling merch promoting ‘Trump 2028’, the year of the next election which Trump is constitutionally unable to run for. Despite the Constitution explicitly stating Trump cannot run for a third term – having won the election firstly in 2016 and then again in 2024 – the Republican leaders online shop has started to sell products emblazoned with ‘Trump 2028’, similar to the design of his previous campaign materials. The products featuring the slogan include a hat, t-shirt and can coolers.
“The future looks bright! Rewrite the rules with the Trump 2028 high crown hat. Fully embroidered with a snap closure in the back, this will become your new go-to hat,” the description for the red hat reads. On the t-shirt design ‘Trump 2028’ is followed, in smaller letters, by ‘Rewrite the Rules’ – likely a reference to the Constitution.
Since becoming president for a second time and returning to the White House, Trump has refused to rule out running for a third term despite not being allowed to do so. The products suggest a 2028 political run for Trump (Trump Store)In March, the president told NBC News on running again: “There are methods [by] which you could do it. I’m not joking.
”Trump added his allies are rallying for him to have a third term: “A lot of people want me to do it. But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”The outlet went on to ask if Trump if vice president JD Vance could run for president in the future, win the election and hand over the presidency to Trump.
To this, he responded: “That’s one [method]” but added “there are others, too”.Regardless of Trump’s hints and refusals to rule out a third term, the rules of the Constitution’s 22nd Amendment are steadfast. Enacted in 1951 after Franklin D Roosevelt was elected four times – making him the longest-serving president and the only president to have served over two terms – the Amendment states: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.
” In addition to this, the 12th Amendment states: “No person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.”If Trump did want to challenge the Constitution, in order to once again run for president, a two-thirds vote would be required in Congress or a constitutional convention, which 34 out of 50 states would need to request. The post ‘Trump 2028’ hats and t-shirts on sale at Trump store in chilling nod to third term ambitions appeared first on PinkNews | Latest lesbian, gay, bi and trans news | LGBTQ+ news.
