US President Donald Trump has announced he will sign "one of the most consquential" executive orders on Monday which will aim to lower the cost of drug prices. In a Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump said the order would slash prescription prices to the level paid by other high-income countries. Trump vowed for years to lower the cost of prescription drugs, but didn't sign an executive order to do so until the very end of his first term in office. His first executive order attempting to reduce drug prices was stopped by a federal judge after drug companies filed a lawsuit against it.
The plan would have linked the prices of Medicare Part B drugs, most of which are medications administered in healthcare facilities like chemotherapy drugs, to the same price as countries like Canada, Germany and the U.K. pay for them.
The Trump administration said at the time that it could save U.S. taxpayers over $85 billion over seven years, but it's not clear if Trump's new plan will once again only target Medicare Part B drugs or include other medications covered by the program.
