(PHOTO: PHIVOLCS FACEBOOK PAGE) Two moderately strong and shallow earthquakes struck off Cagayan province early Monday morning, April 28, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The first quake hit at 12:54 a.m.
Its epicenter was traced 13 kilometers (km) northwest of Dalupiri Island, Cagayan, at a depth of 15 km. Phivolcs said the tremor was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Calayan Island, Cagayan, and at Intensity III in Pagudpud, Pasuquin, Bacarra, Laoag City, and San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte. The second quake occurred at 1:18 a.
m., with its epicenter 73 km northwest of Dalupiri Island. It struck 48 km beneath the surface.
It was felt at Intensity V in Calayan, Cagayan; Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Pasuquin, Bacarra, and San Nicolas in Ilocos Norte; and Intensity III in Batac City, Ilocos Norte. Phivolcs said the earthquakes were tectonic in origin, which were caused by the movement of an active fault near the area. The agency has warned of possible aftershocks.
