Residents were warned to "stay away" from a beauty spot as police investigated two "grenades" this morning, Saturday. Lancashire Police cordoned off a road that cuts across Rivington Reservoir – Horrobin Lane in Horwich – after a member of the public found the devices in the area just before 8am. A huge emergency services response attended the area.
The road remained blocked until close to noon as the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team assessed the suspicious items. The team found what "appeared to be training grenades from the 1940s to1960s" that had been deactivated "previously" – and posed no threat to the public. The cordon has since been removed and the area is open to the public.
A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: “We and emergency service partners were at Rivington Reservoir following the discovery of two grenade-type devices earlier this morning (Saturday). “A team from EOD have attended the site on Horrobin Lane and assessed the devices which appear to be training grenades from the 1940s to 1960s. "They were previously deactivated and posed no threat.
“The cordon has been stood down and the area is open for public access. “The items were found at the side of Rivington Reservoir shortly before 8am.".
