Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough rose up the draft boards in the weeks leading up to the 2025 NFL Draft. Here's where he'll start his pro career.

Quarterback Tyler Shough came to Louisville football looking for an opportunity. He left the Cardinals as a second-round pick. The New Orleans Saints drafted Shough with the 40th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on Friday — Louisville’s first draftee of the class.

He’s also the first U of L quarterback to be drafted since Lamar Jackson (2018) and the program’s seventh signal caller selected since 2000. That matches Stanford for the most in the ACC over the last 25 years. Shough spent his first three years of college at Oregon, where he was a backup to Justin Herbert before becoming the starter in the COVID-influenced 2020 season.

He then transferred to Texas Tech, where injuries spoiled his next three years. The Arizona native had the option of entering the draft last year and was advised to be an undrafted free agent. Instead, he appealed for a seventh season of college football due to medical hardship and was approved.

Shough used the final year at Louisville, where he threw for a career-high 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns with only six interceptions. He completed 63% of his passes and went 8-4 as the Cardinals’ starter. The All-ACC honorable mention choice was the 13th Cardinals quarterback to total 3,000 passing yards in a season and finished 20th nationally in passing yards and 29th in touchdowns.
