Pune: New patient admissions and OPD registrations were briefly disrupted at the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital after a technical glitch in the UPS around 9.30am on Thursday. The technical snag suspended the internet which resulted in an impact on all related services.
According to the hospital, the outage happened around 9.30am and affected services only to cause confusion among people, especially at token counters. Many patients were left waiting in the lobby.
The electricity supply was not cut from the power utility (MSEDCL). A senior official from the hospital said the disruption lasted only 15 to 20 minutes due to a fault in the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). Services were quickly restored after technicians provided a direct power connection to the hospital server.
"The treatment of patients admitted in the hospital was not affected," he said. Another official from the hospital administration said even as treatment was not affected, several works that usually requires a computer, such as generation of lab reports, was delayed. The patients and relatives claimed that the issue lasted for more than an hour and the power was restored only after 10am.
The doctors at OPD consult patients between 9am and 12midnight every day. Many patients and their relatives start reaching the hospital from 8am for tokens. The outage, therefore, caused a huge crowd of patients and relatives and it led to chaos.
Sandesh Shinde, who came for a routine appointment for his mother, said, "The issue started much before 9am and continued for more than an hour. Those who had time waited for it to resolve, while some like me, who had to go to work, returned home without consulting the doctor." "Since the token generation started late, our appointment was also delayed and we had to wait for a long period to consult the doctor.
The doctor, however, gave us adequate time to understand the problem and it made us feel good after waiting," said Suraj Jadhav, a resident of Moshi..
