Trader Joe's has issued an urgent recall for 500 units of a popular product that could leave millions of Americans in 18 states wheezing and vomiting.

Trader Joe's has voluntarily recalled a limited quantity of its Trader Joe's Sesame Miso Salad with Salmon in 18 states after they were found to contain packets of parmesan cheese instead of crispy onions.

The parmesan packets contain milk, which could cause severe reactions in the 30million Americans with lactose intolerance and the 7million with dairy allergies. The supermarket giant pulled 500 units in Alabama , Iowa , Illinois , Indiana , Kansas , Kentucky, Michigan , Minnesota , Missouri , North Carolina, Nebraska , New Jersey , New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Recalled salads were produced by Taylor Fresh Foods Illinois and had a 'Use By' date of either April 28 or April 29, 2025.

An estimated 30 to 50million Americans are lactose intolerant, meaning their bodies cannot properly digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and other dairy products. Symptoms usually start within 30 minutes to two hours of consuming a dairy product and include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, bloating and gas. Additionally, roughly two percent of Americans - 6.6million - are allergic to milk, Consumers who purchased the products have been urged to discard them if they or someone else in their household has a milk allergy.

When a person with a milk allergy consumes it, their immune system mistakes the proteins as a threat. The immune system triggers a flurry of antibodies to neutralize the threat, leading to symptoms like hives, wheezing, itching, tingling and swelling of the lips, coughing or shortness of breath and vomiting. In severe cases, milk allergies can cause anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction that makes the airways close up.

Milk is the third most common food to cause anaphylaxis behind peanuts and tree nuts. About 500 to 1,000 Americans die of anaphylaxis every year. Customers with questions can contact customer service at (855) 455-0098 Monday through Friday between 8am and 5pm PST.
