Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s record-breaking century at the age of just 14 has been branded as the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) “greatest ever” performance in the history of the T20 league by legendary South African captain Shaun Pollock. Australian great Adam Gilchrist was impressed with Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s “calmness,” while batting great Sachin Tendulkar hailed his “fearless” approach to playing against some of the best players in the world. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who was signed by the Rajasthan Royals (RR) for Rs 1.
1 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction, created the record of the youngest to play in the league earlier this month. And on Monday, Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest to hit a hundred in the league as he bulldozed Gujarat Titans (GT) with a blistering knock of 101 from just 38 balls at Jaipur. His century came in just 35 balls as RR won by eight wickets, chasing 210 and keeping their playoffs hopes alive.
With his match-winning knock, Vaibhav Suryavanshi not only became the youngest to hit a hundred in IPL, but he is also the youngest batter to score a century in T20 cricket overall. Such was the magnitude of his achievement that former South African captain Pollock declared it the greatest ever individual performance in IPL’s history. Remember, while IPL is 18 years old, Vaibhav Suryavanshi is only 15.
“These are international-class bowlers. We are talking about Rashid Khan, two quicks at the top of order. These are proper international bowlers and they just disappeared.
For me, this is the greatest individual performance of the IPL ever,” Pollock told Cricbuzz. “It has to be. For a 14-year-old to stand out there and smashing around.
He got a hundred of 35 balls. There have been great victories and performances but that has to be the greatest ever performance in IPL history. “The fourth year of IPL, he wasn’t born.
There were some guys in IPL who were playing IPL for four years before he was born. To walk out like he did today and he just dictated terms. Remarkable.
” Fellow panellist and wicket-keeping great Gilchrist was equally impressed by the calmness Vaibhav Suryavanshi displayed and by the variety of shots he played. “Not for a moment when he got to the fifty, it felt like that’s job done. What a relief and show of his great excitement.
It was just focus. I was really impressed with the calmness and shot selection. He goes aggressively for leg side.
I thought by the end of the innings, I was impressed that he had a greater array of shots than just the slog over midwicket,” Gilchrist told Cricbuzz. More praises poured in for Vaibhav Suryavanshi on social media platforms as Tendulkar and Yuvraj hailed the young Indian talent. “Vaibhav’s fearless approach, bat speed, picking the length early, and transferring the energy behind the ball was the recipe behind a fabulous innings.
