A VILLAGE shop has been granted a licence to sell alcohol until midnight. Members of Bradford Council’s Licensing Panel granted the licence to Village Mini Market in Clayton at a meeting on Thursday. The store, on School Street, previously had a licence to serve alcohol from 9am to 8pm, but Sangar Mohammed Ahmadi applied to the Council for longer opening hours – 7am to midnight.
There had been one objection to the application, saying Clayton was “extremely quiet” after 9pm, and this proved there was no demand for alcohol after this time. The objector said the later hours could lead to speeding vehicles, and added: “The abuse of alcohol is a significant problem for our society.” At Thursday’s meeting Tony Clarke, representing Mr Ahmadi, said the objector lived half a mile from the shop.
He told the panel a petition supporting the extended hours had been signed by 98 people. He said: “I feel this is a modest variation of hours, and there have been no objections from local neighbours.” Members voted to approve the extended hours.
