Vincent Kompany sheds light on Leroy Sané contract situation after Bayern Munich beats Mainz

Bayern Munich will have to wait at least another week to officially be crowned Bundesliga Champions due to Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-0 win over Augsburg, but the German Rekordmeister took care of business at the Allianz Arena, beating Mainz 3-0. Goals from Leroy Sané, Michael Olise and Eric Dier put the ribbon on what was a dominant performance from Vincent Kompany’s side, worthy of being able to lift the Meisterschale in front of the home support, but they will have to wait until next weekend to get their hands on the silverware assuming they don’t lose to RB Leipzig. On the overall balance, Bayern out shot Mainz 14-8 and there were arguably more gaps in the second half when Kompany had to take off Kim min-Jae at halftime for Sacha Boey and slightly reconfigure the back line.

Even with that said, Bayern was always the more dangerous side throughout proceedings and Sané’s 27th minute opener after a lovely bit of dribbling was the byproduct of pressure that had already been mounting on Mainz’s goal. Speaking after the match, Kompany was asked about Sané’s contract situation, as the most recent rumor rumblings have suggested the club is ready to give the winger a new, three-year contract extension on reduced wages. “We had a lot of discussions over contracts this season and I’ve always been respectful for all parties.

Leroy and his people have to sit with the club and make a decision together. For me what matters is what the guys show on the pitch. That’s how I assess them.

If they play that means they did something right, if they don’t play that means others were better,” the Belgian manager explained, insinuating that recent spike in minutes is a result of his positive performances (via @iMiaSanMia ). The latest signals have suggested a three-year offer has already been written up for the winger, and Kompany diplomatically explained that it is essentially just a formality at this point.

It is clear that the manager appreciates the run of positive performances the winger has put together. So far this season, Sané has tallied 12 goals and five assists from 42 appearances across all competitions, and he has really only worked his way more regularly into the starting lineup in the second half of the season. During most of the first half of the season, his appearances came off of the bench.
