Watch this unforgettable encounter between a Filipina child and Pope Francis when he visited Manila in January 2015

MANILA, Philippines – It was January 2015, and Pope Francis was leading an organized “encounter” with young people at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. The program included children telling the Pope their stories and asking them their questions. One of the children, 12-year-old Glyzelle Iris Palomar, who used to live in the streets before a charity rescued her, asked a particularly difficult question, which she delivered in tears: Why does God allow children to suffer? Why do very few people help us? Pope Francis listened intently, keeping an eye on Palomar as he kept up with what she was saying by reading a printed translation.

He then called her and the boy who read his story with her, spoke with them in private, and then embraced each of them. The encounter ended in a group hug. At his homily, Pope Francis addressed Palomar’s question: We must all learn how to cry as Jesus Christ himself cried over human suffering.
