In the ultimate taste test just in time for Easter, our team tucked into a selection of supermarket and luxury Easter eggs — and the results may surprise you. With a range of flavours, price points and packaging styles, we wanted to discover which eggs really deliver on taste, creativity, value and visual wow factor. Eggs were scored on a number of factors from richest chocolate to best value and here were the top three in each category: Coming out on top was Lidl’s Deluxe Triple Chocolate Marbled Egg priced at £6.
99, wowing our panel with its rich, smooth texture and blend of white, milk and dark chocolate. Close behind was Tesco’s Raisin & Biscuit Chocolate Egg, which delivered nostalgic Dairy Milk Fruit & Nut vibes that scored major points for flavour and texture. Rounding off the top three was Morrisons' The Best Belgian Dark Chocolate with Pink Himalayan Salt, a more refined option with a grown-up twist.
For the adventurous eaters, Morrisons' The Best Belgian Milk & Blonde Chocolate with Caramel, Pretzel & Honeycomb stood out, scoring high for its bold and unexpected flavour combo. It also ranked well for value, but landed mid-table in the overall ranking and the richness category. Waitrose’s No.
1 Blonde Chocolate & Biscuit Flat Egg brought something different to the table with its buttery blonde chocolate and biscuit crunch — ideal for sweet-toothed snackers, but not the best value for money. Aldi’s Specially Selected Salted Blonde & Milk Chocolate Caramel Double Indulgence was another creative twist, but some testers found it a little too sweet to handle. For those after a bargain, Lidl’s Deluxe Orange Chocolate Marbled Egg offered top-tier flavour at a budget-friendly price, while the triple chocolate version also landed among the best in value and taste.
Again, Morrisons’ Caramel, Pretzel & Honeycomb Egg was recognised for offering something different at a reasonable price point. Launching for the first time this Easter, the egg is available for pre-order via The Ivy Collection’s website. While luxury brands like Hotel Chocolat and The Ivy bring the wow factor, this year’s sweet surprise is that affordable supermarket options — particularly from Lidl and Tesco — are giving premium names a run for their money.
