Class 5A's top two ranked baseball teams, La Cueva and Sandia, both had the majority of their doubleheaders postponed by all the rain — and snow — that fell on Saturday morning.Sandia and La Cueva started the day both undefeated at 4-0 in District 2-5A.The Matadors were at third-place Eldorado, with the Eagles leading 5-4 in the top of the fifth when Game 1 was suspended.
Sandia has two runners aboard with one out when this doubleheader resumes. That is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Monday, April 28, at Eldorado, which is two games behind the co-leaders in district. At La Cueva, the Bears were crushing Capital 9-0 in the bottom of the second when Game 1 of that twin-bill had to be stopped. It, too, will pick up at 3 p.
m. on April 28, with the resumption and completion of the first game before Game 2.Both Sandia and La Cueva already have doubleheaders scheduled next Saturday — the Bears at Santa Fe, the Matadors at home versus Capital.
So, that will make for an abundance of baseball for both rivals between April 26 and April 28. The two then close the regular season against each other with two games on May 3.Not everything was cancelled, however, as Sandia and La Cueva each completed the first game of their softball doubleheaders before the weather intervened.
The Bears, ranked second in Class 5A, blasted Capital 20-0 in a game called by mercy rule after 2 1/2 innings.Lili Montoya hit a pair of home runs and had four RBIs for La Cueva, which scored 15 runs in the first inning. MaceRae Santistevan hit a grand slam for the Bears and went 3-for-3.
La Cueva is 5-0 in district. Montoya also pitched all three innings, and struck out nine batters.Sandia is also 5-0 in league play after winning 9-3 in Game 1 over Eldorado.
Liliana Villanueva was 2-for-2 with a home run. Aleena Duran and Natalie Uecker, like Villanueva, drove in a pair of runs.Game 2 of La Cueva-Capital has yet to be rescheduled.
