In a season that has seen Weldon Valley baseball struggling to find a victory, the Warriors breathed their first sigh of relief earlier this month. On April 11, in their home contest against Briggsdale, the Warriors and Falcons battled to a 7-7 tie, one that only needed four innings to reach its conclusion. The Falcons struck first with three runs in the top of the first inning, and the Warriors, while a bit deflated, still managed to respond with one run in the bottom of the same frame.
The home team tapped into the energy it lacked in the first by netting three more runs in the second, and briefly enjoyed a 4-3 lead before the Falcons regained their offensive form. Both teams put up three runs in the third, forcing Briggsdale to come up with some kind of response in the top of the fourth. It did just that, then kept the Warriors scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The game reached an early conclusion after that. Weldon Valley sophomore Zander Braun led his team in the batter’s box with a three-run home run, then scored another two runs with his own two feet. Sophomore Bella Petrino was the only other Warrior to earn a hit and an RBI together.
Sophomore Seth O’Patik and sophomore Brevyn Starner accounted for the last two RBIs — one each — without reaching a base themselves. O’Patik and junior August Filter split the responsibilities from the mound. Filter took on the brunt of it by pitching 2 1/3 innings, which yielded five strikeouts, two walks and four earned runs.
O’Patik, in 1 1/3 innings, struck out four batters, walked two and gave up just one earned run. The Warriors will end their season later this week, starting with a road game at Denver Academy on Wednesday and ending with a home matchup against Kiowa on Friday..
