The White Lotus’ Aimee Lou Wood has defended trans rights after the UK Supreme Court ruled that the legal definition of a woman excludes trans women, telling her fans that she feels “pure rage” for the trans and non-binary community.Yesterday (16 April), the UK Supreme Court ruled to exclude trans women from the definition, stating that the 2010 Equality Act’s definition of a woman is based on biological sex. It’s a decision that will have implications for trans and non-binary people across the country, particularly in regards to public bodies and organisations operating single-sex spaces.
“The unanimous decision of this court is that the terms woman and sex in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex,” Supreme Court judge Lord Hodge said.“But we counsel against reading this judgement as a triumph of one or more groups in our society at the expense of another, it is not,” he added, noting that trans people still have protection under the law.He further said that “the Equality Act 2010 gives transgender people protection, not only against discrimination through the protected characteristic of gender reassignment, but also against direct discrimination, indirect discrimination and harassment in substance in their acquired gender”.
The White Lotus star said she was filled with “pure rage” after the ruling. (Instagram/@aimeelouwood)Trans activists and allies have spoken up in response to the ruling, with The White Lotus star Wood taking to Instagram to affirm her stance as a pro-LGBTQ+ ally. “Pure rage,” she began atop a re-shared post by activist and Outrage author Ellen Jones.
“This country is a hellhole.”Jones’ original post read: “The UK Supreme Court unanimously decided that the definition of sex under the Equality Act 2010 refers solely to biological sex, and does not include people with a Gender Recognition Certificate.“The fact that trans people were excluded from the evidence and findings and not a single trans person was consulted, is amoral and indefensible.
“Imagine if that was a different group of people – there would be uproar,” the post continued. “This ruling sets an alarmingly dangerous precedent. It puts the UK back at least 20 years in terms of protections.
