John Whiting scored a sensational undefeated double century to help Market Overton to victory in a Rutland derby on Saturday. Whiting whacked 24 fours and 12 sixes in his 218 not out as Marko 2nds defeated Wakerley and Barrowden in Division Nine East of the Leicestershire League. His innings helped Marko post a massive 330-5 from their 40 overs as Wakerley eventually fell 86 runs short in their reply.
Whiting was well supported in his innings by fellow opener Will Abbott who made 28 despite breaking his toe in the process while Chris Collings contributed 37. Pete Vernon collected three wickets for Wakerley whose reply was led by James Gibbs (57), Chris White (60) and Matt Heath (68). Whiting also collected a catch behind the stumps to dismiss White off the bowling of Lucy Farmer after carrying his bat for 40 overs while Sarah Musson showed a safe pair of hands on the boundary to oust Gibbs from an Elliott Hudson delivery.
Marko's first team were unable to build on their opening day win after a two-wicket loss at Gumley on Saturday. Joe Peveritt top-scored with 39 while Mark Hudson hit an unbeaten 36 as Marko were bowled out for 170. Hudson, Stewart Naylor and Tom Goodliffe all collected two wickets in reply but Gumley edged a close contest.
Oakham suffered a second successive defeat in the Premier Division after a nine-wicket loss at Newtown Linford. Opener Richard Martin made 54 while S Flowers added 44 as Oakham were dismissed for 192. They only made one breakthrough in the home side's reply as Newtown Linford wrapped up the win inside 27 overs.
Uppingham are also still looking to break their winning duck after a 134-run reversal against Broomleys in Division One. Scott Green and Mark Cox both claimed three wickets each as their visitors were bowled out for 223. However, Uppingham could only muster 89 in reply with Hayden Brough top-scoring for the second successive game after making 41.
Oakham 2nds went down by 53 runs in their home match with Leicester Cricketers in Division Four East. Sam McAvoy was again their stand-out performer with the ball as he took four wickets as their visitors posted 254-9 after batting first. Mark Owen led the reply with 57 while Henry Stephenson struck 51 as Oakham were all out for 201.
Uppingham 2nds were beaten by eight wickets at Thorpe Arnold 2nds in Division Five East. Openers Ben Harford (45) and George Scott (37) helped Town total 172 which their hosts passed inside 36 overs. Neil Southern struck an unbeaten century as Oakham 3rds triumphed by 105 runs at Fleckney Village 2nds in Division Nine East.
The opener made 116 not out while Graeme North added 46 with Will Stuart-Jones unbeaten on a 47 at the close as Oakham posted 245-4 from their 40 overs. James Anthony then took 5-23 while Tom Clifton claimed 3-38 as Fleckney finished up being bowled out for 140. Ketton Sports lost by 39 runs in their South Lincs and Border League Championship clash against Bourne 2nds at Pit Lane.
They had bowled out their visitors for 151 but Sports were dismissed for 112 in reply. Josh Bentley hit an unbeaten 54 for Bourne while Xavier Wildsmith, Freddie Renton and Sam Halsall all collected three wickets for Ketton. Jacob Miller made 51 in their reply while Tom Patchell and Drew Kirtland-Blundell each took three wickets for Bourne.
