Opinion I was born and raised in Brandon, which has always voted in a Conservative MP, with the exception of Liberal Glen McKinnon from 1993-97. If people were rational when it comes to voting over the years, statistically a different political party would be voted in over time.

Issues change, and so do party leaders for prime minister. Personally I had enough of Justin Trudeau (who I voted for twice), and was planning to vote NDP or Conservative. Then entered Prime Minister Mark Carney.

A man with solid work history in finance, extremely well educated, a man from the West (Albertan) and a very cool demeanour. What more would anyone want? Pierre Poilievre on the other hand, has only briefly worked in the real world, is well educated holding a bachelor of arts degree in international relations, and is a lifelong politician. When considering the political environment with Donald Trump, logically, just from the above information, which would be the best person to be prime minister? Among Pierre Poilievre’s priorities: 1.

Dismantle our precious CBC. 2. Was planning to bust unions with American-style “right to work” legislation (what a misnomer).

Shall we find out? 3. Supported the radical demonstrators at the border who couldn’t understand what basic science is if they tried. 4.

Is clearly anti-abortion. American women are bleeding out to death in the hospital ERs because of serious complications. You want that? 5.

Believed marriage should only be between a man and a woman. Gay society has always existed in every society around the world. Of what consequence are they to your life? What people do in the privacy of their own homes is their business, not your business.

They don’t reproduce, so what’s there to worry about? How about practising some of that unconditional Christian love and acceptance you hear every Sunday at church? 6. Can only run a negative campaign, without any solid plan of his own. I could go on and on.

Liberal Bruce Fanjoy toppled Pierre Poilievre’s seat in Carleton, his own riding for quite some time. Let’s take a look at the NDP under Jagmeet Singh’s accomplishments, which almost everyone chooses to ignore. He has done a lot for Canadians by forcing Trudeau’s hand on many issues.

He will be missed. 1. Canadian dental plan 2.

School lunch program 3. One-time rental supplements for low-income tenants. 4.

Pharmacare program covering birth control, insulin, etc. 5. Ten days of paid sick leave for federally regulated workers.

6. Temporary doubling of the GST rebate. 7.

Ban on replacement workers during a strike or lockout. 8. Housing accelerator fund that allocated billions to help build homes.

I recall my esteemed Vincent Massey High School teacher Mr. David Palidwar always saying, “Vote on the issues, people.” He was among some of the best.

Well ...

the issues were quite obvious to me. Who would you hire to run your country given the obvious political circumstances? Personally, I vote for leadership and a clear party platform regardless of the “brand” of the party. It’s called thinking critically, or using your head.

In my opinion, voting Conservative when you have a man like Mark Carney to lead your country isn’t the application of critical thinking. Far from it. Advertisement Advertisement.
