Why a simple video is raising a controversial question about 14-year-old boy who stunned the sport by hitting a century against some of the best players in the game Vai bhav Suryavanshi smashed a hundred in IPL off 35 balls Teen sensation is representing the Rajasthan Royals Uncertainty over whether the batting prodigy is 14 or 16 By ANDREW PRENTICE FOR DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA and ZAC CAMPBELL Published: 08:28, 30 April 2025 | Updated: 08:32, 30 April 2025 e-mail View comments Questions are being asked by cricket fans globally when it comes to the age of Indian batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The teenager, who was signed in the last auction by the Rajasthan Royals aged just 13, may actually be a couple of years older. A You Tube clip from 2023 featuring Suryavanshi suggests the young gun is now actually 16 - not 14, as has been widely reported.
In the same video, Suryavanshi tells the interviewer 'I'll turn 15 on September 27th.' This means he could be currently 16 going on 17 - and there is further confusion given his listed birth date is March 27 in 2011. So until Suryavanshi's age is clarified, the uncertainty will remain.
Questions are being asked by cricket fans when it comes to the age of Indian batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi (pictured, after becoming the youngest player to score an IPL century) Playing for the Rajasthan Royals, the prodigy plundered 100 runs off just 35 balls against the Gujarat Titans What isn't being disputed is Suryavanshi's poise at the crease. On Monday, the prodigy plundered 11 sixes en-route to setting the record for the fastest-ever century by an Indian player - off just 35 balls - in the tournament's history. Suryavanshi's brutal knock helped Rajastan Royals coast to victory as they chased an imposing total of 209 set by Gujarat Titans.
It was made all the more impressive by the fact he was facing up to a Titans attack which included current and former Indian Test bowlers in Mohammed Siraj and Ishant Sharma as well as wily Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan. Not surprisingly, Suryavanshi was named player of the match. Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, the teenager said: 'It is like a dream to score a century in the IPL.
'It feels really good. The results are showing for what I have been practising for the last three to four months. I just focus on the ball.
' Despite his heroics, Suryavanshi has been warned about getting ahead of himself by former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag. Speaking on Cricbuzz, the former opener said: 'I have seen many players who come, get fame from one or two matches, then they do not do anything, because they think that they have become a star player,' he said of the schoolboy. 'Look at Virat Kohli.
He started at 19 and has now played all 18 IPL seasons. 'That's what Vaibhav should aim for.'
