The two teams will return to the Premier League and won't receive parachute payments as a result

Leeds United and Burnley have secured their returns to the Premier League as both sides earned promotion this week and it seems many teams in the top flight will be happy to see them back due to an interesting rule. The former were relegated in 2023 and, after missing out on the chance to go straight back up to the promised land last season, they have righted that wrong this time around and, under Daniel Farke, they have fought their way back to the Premier League. The latter were only relegated last season and, despite losing manager Vincent Kompany to Bayern Munich, they've bounced straight back up under the guidance of Scott Parker and confirmed promotion for both teams with their victory over Sheffield United on Monday.

Due to both sides returning to the Premier League so shortly after leaving the division, their planned parachute payments have been voided. As a result, every team in the top flight will be very happy and a recent report explains why. From promotion hopefuls to those flirting with relegation, Opta's supercomputer have predicted how the 2024/25 Championship season will conclude.

Their Parachute Payments Will Go to the Rest of the Premier League When a team is relegated from the Premier League, they're expected to take a serious hit financially. As a result, the top flight distributes parachute payments to those who suffer the drop into the Championship. They receive a windfall of cash every season for the first three years that they're in the second tier to help them adjust to life outside of the Premier League.

As a result of both Leeds and Burnley returning to the top flight before their three years of parachute payments ran out, they will no longer receive them. Instead, according a report from the Mirror, the rest of the money that was originally going to be given to the two sides will now be distributed among the rest of the Premier League teams . While it's unclear the exact figure that both clubs were set to receive in parachute payments, in 2021 it was revealed that the sides receiving parachute payments were getting around £30m each, so the Premier League clubs are all set to earn a decent amount of money as a result of both Leeds and Burnley making their way back to the top flight.

It's hard to imagine any of them will be disappointed about this. The race to join the two sides in the top flight is still in full swing. With Sheffield United now missing out on an automatic promotion spot following their loss to Burnley on Monday, the Yorkshire-based club will be forced to compete in the playoffs for that final place in the Premier League instead.

So far, the Blades and Sunderland are the only two sides to have secured a place in the playoffs. The likes of Bristol City, Coventry City, Middlesbrough, Millwall, Blackburn Rovers, West Bromwich Albion and Swansea City are all mathematically still in contention for the last two places and it's all going to be decided in the final two games of the campaign..
