The latest album from actor Will Smith has left music lovers astounded after they realised how few copies had sold. The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Men in Black star has enjoyed a successful music career, having even performed the theme song to the show that made him a household name. But Smith's success has taken a hit recently, with his latest album dubbed 'a flop' by listeners who pointed out his latest could be one of his "lowest selling.
" 'Based on a True Story' was released on March 28 of this year but does not appear to have made much of an impact in the charts. A post to the r/Music subreddit reads: "I'm curious what the lowest selling album by an established artist is..
. Not an artist who sold 3,000,000 copies then went down to 1,000,000. "But an artist who sold millions then released and album that sold only a few thousand if that.
Robin Thicke comes to mind with ‘Paula’ and maybe the latest Will Smith which didn’t even chart." One user suggested Smith had the biggest drop-off of all, and a sudden one at that. Despite the name value of the artists featured on the album, 'Based on a True Story' failed to crack the Billboard 200 – the first time Smith managed to miss the Top 200 altogether.
Across the pond, 'Based on a True Story' shifted just 268 physical copies in the first week of its release in the UK. A further 36 digital downloads were reported in the UK also, according to The Sun . However, despite the lack of listens, Smith is set to embark on a European tour off the back of this album release.
He confirmed the tour writing on his Instagram: "I'M GOING ON TOUR THIS SUMMER!! We're hitting up the UK & Europe to bring U all the hits, some new joints, and a few surprises ;-) All these years, I've NEVER done a headline tour and I can't wait to see you guys!!" Reddit users offered some perspective on the recent release from Smith, with one user pointing out an album from 2005 managed to sell more that week than Smith's contemporary work. One user wrote: "To put it in perspective, Eminem's Curtain Call is still on the top 200." Another added: "Damn just found out Will Smith's playing at a small 2,000 seat venue in my s***ty UK hometown in August and there's still a bunch of tickets available, that's actually kinda shocking.
" Some have offered a more positive perspective on Smith's latest album release. One user suggested streaming numbers are more important than appearing on the Billboard 200. One user wrote: "Yeah but who buys albums anymore anyway.
Streaming numbers with context would be a better measure." The most-streamed song off the album is currently 'You can Make It' at 3.8million streams.
